30 Days of Thankfulness: Day 8

Posted on

According to Josh, the kids and I forgot to be thankful today. That’s not true. I actually tried to ask Emmie what her blessings were, and she just stood there shaking her head like a deranged wombat. But if I had to venture a guess, here’s what I’d say we’re all thankful for today.

Gareth: Where the Wild Things Are and his ninja star. Oh, and by “ninja star” I mean that I found this little yellow plastic star off of one of his baby toys, so I throw it at him and yell “Ninja star!” and he thinks I’m hilarious.

Emmie: Leaves. She loves it when everybody jumps in the pile with her and throws them all over her. Personally, I find the practice a little terrifying (what if there’s dog poop or bugs in there?!), but it’s a childhood rite of passage, so yes I jump in with her. By the end we’re all laughing–except Gareth, who finds the whole practice irritating. He’d rather be chasing a ball or anything with wheels. For those of you who didn’t know…Gareth is really a puppy in a person’s body.

I’m thankful that Josh’s 15 hour day ended up only (!) being a 12 hour day. I’m thankful for a truly hideous old dresser that I’m having fun refinishing (you’ll have to take my word for it. I forgot to take pictures). And I’m thankful for giggles, snuggles, and sleep. Speaking of sleep…it’s calling to me now.

30 Days of Thankfulness: Day 5

“Emmie, what’s something you’re thankful for?”

“Umm…YOU, Mommy!”

“And some things I’m thankful for are my red cabinets and your daddy, who works so hard to paint them for me. Can you think of something else you’re thankful for?”

“God.”

“God gives us our blessings. Can you think of a blessing God has given you?”

“Gareth!”

Later Emmie added that coloring is a blessing, and I’m thankful for yard work because it means we own a yard that we can make beautiful.

“Emmie, what blessing are you thankful for today?”

“Umm, God.” She’s sweet, but I think this is turning into a default response.

“Well I’m thankful for Daddy and how hard he works.”

“I’m thankful for Daddy too. Lollipop is when God chews it.”

“Lollipop is when God chews it?”

“And He doesn’t have a body, and He doesn’t have teeth.”

“Right. So I don’t think he chews lollipops.”

This is a completely unoriginal idea, but it’s still one that I thought would be good for us. Cue the conversation with Emmie about blessings and being thankful.

“Emmie, do you know what a blessing is?”

“No.”

“A blessing is a good thing God gives us. Can you think of a blessing you’re thankful for?”

“Clipping!” We’d just finished scissor practice about five minutes earlier.

“A blessing I’m thankful for is you and Gareth. You are my blessings.”

“Aww, Mommy, that’s so sweet!”
